Shane & Shane (epic Psalms writers from Texas) have joined with their residency program based in a retreat in Denver, "Writer's Well ", to release their big Psalm contribution of 2023.

Up to this point Shane & Shane had only released two Psalms songs in 2023 (their children's music project "Kingdom Kids"). Already both projects have a lot of excitement surrounding them.

What has happened in the world of Psalm songs this year

Red Rock Worship released an EP with two songs inspired by Psalms. There were strong tracks from artists who had not released Psalms before. These included Phil Wickham's epic Psalm 23 feat. Tiffany Hudson, Caleb Gordon reflections on Psalm 139 (hip hop/trap/drill), Christy Nockels' Psalm 2 (contemporary folk), Hannah Barr's indie pop song Psalm 23 - Fear and Ri-An's earworm Safe (Psalm 91).

in August 2021 Bellwether Arts' released two EP's "Cast your Burden's: Songs of Praise" and "When We Call His Name: Songs of Comfort". They are a folk delight. The production and intent of a serious folk release complete with droning squeeze boxs and banjo. Those who like "Iron & Wine" may appreciate the gentle approach. Eight of the songs are Psalm Songs. Bellwether Arts is a collective of liturgical artists from Holland, Michigan USA.

"Project Of Love"

projectoflove.com is a project of Xander Stok, a prolific Scripture composer from the Netherlands. This Project is an exciting addition to the Psalm-singers corpus. Currently Project of Love is releasing scripture songs each friday using the The Message paraphrase.

It was a refreshing experience for me discovering Project of Love this week; the vibrancy of the cover art, the sincerity of the songwriting, the strong committment to scripture and persistant, weekly releases. Like "Poor Bishop Hooper" releasing weekly from 2020-2022, "Project of Love" has brought forth an integrated and ambitious project with strong calling and clear mission.

As of today there are 15 Psalms totalling one hour of music. You can find them in our Spotify playlist Psalms - Project Of Love.

John Calvin Prologue to the Psalms

Of any texts John Calvin's prologue has moved me to reconsider the power of the Psalms - An Anatomy of The Soul!

"I have been accustomed to call this book [PSALMS], I think not inappropriately, An Anatomy of the Soul; for there is not an emotion of which anyone can be conscious that is not here represented as in a mirror. Or rather, the Holy Spirit has here drawn to the life all the griefs, sorrows, fears, doubts, hopes, cares, perplexities, in short, all the distracting emotions with which the minds of men are wont to be agitated.

The other parts of Scripture contain the commandment which God enjoined his servants to announce to us. But here the prophets themselves seeing they are exhibited to us speaking to God, and laying open all their inmost thoughts and affections, call or rather draw, each of us to the examination of himself in particular, in order that none of the many infirmities to which we are subject, and of the many vices with which we abound, may remain concealed. It is certainly a rare and singular advantage, when all lurking places are discovered, and the heart is brought into the light, purged from that most baneful infection, hypocrisy.

In short, as calling upon God is one of the principal means of securing our safety, and as a better and more unerring rule for guiding us in this exercise cannot be found elsewhere than in the Psalms, it follows, that in proportion to the proficiency which a man shall have attained in understanding them, will be his knowledge of the most important part of celestial doctrine."
